Over 460 acres of woodlands and freshwater swamp await the visitor to Lake Griffin State Recreation Area. With its wide variety of recreational activities, the park offers something for everyone. Showcasing a beautiful woodlands setting, picnicking and camping at the park are especially treasured.
Boasting some of the best freshwater fishing in the state, Lake Griffin offers the angler several different options. The lake may be accessed by boat or canoe via the boat ramp located in the park, which leads to the lake by way of a tributary. If fishing along the banks is your preference, some of the park's best catches can be had along the canal and tributary between the boat ramp and the lake. Canoe rentals are available at the ranger station, and canoeing offers some of the best wildlife observation in the park. Osprey, bald eagle, blue heron, anhinga, ibis, alligator and river otters are all common along the waterways around Lake Griffin.
Located amid a peaceful woodland setting, campers will love the 40-site campground. All of the sites feature picnic tables, grills, fire rings and full hook-ups, and several can accommodate RV's up to 40 feet long. The campground also features restrooms, hot showers and potable water. With its scenic view of the waters near the boat ramp, the picnic area offers a great place for an open-air meal. A volleyball net and two horseshoe pits are located nearby, and equipment is available on request. The ¼-mile long hiking trail leads through the woodlands to a mammoth oak tree, which is the fifth largest in the state. The oak measures over 150 feet tall and 10 feet in circumference. Be sure to visit this natural wonder.
